Gaskets are an essential part of production for many manufacturing sectors, for example, automotive, electronics, military and aerospace industries make use of gaskets to a large extent. Gaskets are seals that must be made of materials that will keep their shape when subjected to particular conditions, therefore, choosing the right material to suit an application is essential. Gaskets are most commonly used to form an air-tight and pressure-tight seam between two other components, forming a seal to prevent gas or liquid leakage. In many cases, gasket seals must be resistant to a number of conditions, including pressure, a wide temperature range, weathering, and in some cases, electrical or electromagnetic force. Whilst it is important that gasket materials don’t degrade when subjected to these conditions, in most cases, gaskets are manufactured from a much more malleable material than the components they join. This allows the gasket to fit better to the shape of the harder surfaces that it forms a seal between.

Rubber and Plastic Gaskets

Rubber gaskets are extremely common due to the elasticity and viscosity of rubber, allowing it to be subjected to high pressures and deformation without being permanently damaged. As a result, rubber gaskets are well suited to forming tight seals for a wide range of applications across a number of industrial sectors. Rubber materials frequently used for gasket production include:

As well as rubber, certain plastics are also popular gasket materials. A number of polymers exhibit similar characteristics to those of rubber making them suitable for use in a wide variety of applications, particularly polyvinyl chloride.

Silicone Gasket Materials

Due to its resistance to extreme temperatures, both low and high, silicone is also widely used as a gasket material. For example, general purpose silicone rubber gaskets can offer resistance to temperatures of between -60°C and 230°C, as well as resisting UV and ozone, making them ideally suited to outdoor applications. Materials commonly used for silicone gaskets include:
